Sac City was platted in 1855 and named for the Sac people, who held the land at the time of the Louisiana Purchase. Judge Eugene Criss is credited as its founder. He crossed the Mississippi by covered wagon that year looking for water power, and built the first log cabin on the North Raccoon River. The 1908 Chautauqua auditorium in Chautauqua Park still stands. Its National Register documentation describes it as the only complete Chautauqua building left in Iowa.
Served by the East Sac County Community School District.
In 2017 a lifelong resident, John Criss, left 5.7 million dollars of his estate to the town.
