About the town

About Manning

Manning gives you more town than its size suggests. You get the IKM-Manning schools, a rebuilt 1660 German Hausbarn and a main street that people still drive in for. If you're buying or selling in Manning, call the office and we'll talk it through.

Manning exists because rail lines met at one spot. The North Western's Audubon branch could only leave the Carroll to Harlan line where the grades allowed it. The Milwaukee road veered north around the hills the year after. The town was platted at that junction in 1881 by O. H. Manning of Carroll. He was the railroad's local attorney, and later Lieutenant Governor of Iowa. The area was settled heavily from Schleswig-Holstein, and in 1996 a Hausbarn built there in 1660 was taken apart, shipped over and rebuilt here.

Served by the IKM-Manning Community School District.
