About Lake City
Lake City gives you a hospital, a school district and a downtown inside the same small town, which is unusual at this size. Stewart Memorial is the largest employer in Calhoun County, so you may not have to commute at all. Your children would go to South Central Calhoun. Call us and we'll show you what's open.
Lake City took its name from Lake Creek. The pond east of town that inspired it was later drained, which is why the sign at the edge of town reads "Everything but a Lake". It held the Calhoun County courthouse from 1856 until an 1876 county vote moved the seat to Rockwell City. Growth came with the Chicago and North Western in 1881, the same year residents voted to incorporate. Since 1974 the town has been home to Dobson Pipe Organ Builders. Their instruments are in Saint Thomas Church in Manhattan, the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia and Merton College Chapel in Oxford.
Served by the South Central Calhoun Community School District.
