About Carroll
Carroll is where the rest of the county ends up doing its errands. Buy here and you're close to the hospital, the schools and the shops. You also get a choice most of these towns can't offer you: the public district or the Kuemper Catholic system. Our office is here in town, so you can walk in. Tell us what you want and we'll tell you what's worth your time.
Carroll exists because of the railroad. The Chicago and North Western pushed its Iowa mainline west across the county in the late 1860s. The town was laid out in 1867, and the first depot went up the same year. The name comes indirectly, through the county, from Charles Carroll of Carrollton. He was the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence, and the last of them to die. In April 1868 the county records were moved here from the older settlement at Carrollton. The new railroad town had eleven residents at the time. It was incorporated as Carroll City in 1869 and renamed Carroll in 1875.
Public students attend the Carroll Community School District, which runs Fairview and Adams elementaries, Carroll Middle School and Carroll High School. Carroll is also the seat of the Kuemper Catholic School System, a regional preschool-through-12 system serving the surrounding parishes.
In January 1960 a DC-3 carrying the Minneapolis Lakers lost its electrical system in a snowstorm. It circled the town looking for an airport, then put down in a cornfield north of 18th Street at about half past one in the morning. Nobody was hurt. The franchise, by then in Los Angeles, donated a basketball court at Veterans Memorial Park on the site for the fiftieth anniversary.
